I started this month talking about Groundhog's Day and how I'm not big into change. I'm a big routine person. And after trying to make a change every day, I'm still a routine person. I mean, come on, I had to turn change-making into a routine in order to be able to do it.
But one of the big no-change areas in my life was my job. I've had the same one for almost ten years . . . and I'm not going to make it all the way to ten. I saved the biggest change for the very end of the month, and it will force me to make quite a few changes from here on out.
Yesterday, I handed in my resignation. My last day is March 31. At that point, my official occupation will be "freelance writer," which is equal parts scary, exciting, and satisfying. There are more adjectives, but those are the main ones. Just typing this gives me an adrenaline rush.
But, as adrenaline doesn't pay the bills, I have work to do. Seriously, what this came down to was whether I was going to trust God or not. Deciding to trust Him, that's the big change. Heather and I agree . . . we'll never regret it.
Paddock vs. Petty: If You Had to Pick One

I’ll declare at the outset that what I’m about to propose is a false
dichotomy. This world is not divided into Tom Pettys and Stephen Paddocks.
But I’m goi...

Wow. Wow. Wow. This is big.
ReplyDeleteAnd awesome.
First, we'll pray that you'll find it quickly fulfilling.
Second, I'd love to hear more about what kinds of things you hope to gravitate towards, because this kind of thing is appealing to me and part of me has always wanted to do it. So as you get experiences, I'd love to hear them.
Third, this kind of thing operates under the "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" category. I can't speak personally of your decision, because I'm not close enough to the situation. But I can offer my personal opinion that it's easier to try something and fail than regret never having tried it. Not that I hope or think you will fail. Only that it's awesome you've decided to take a risk rather than live in regret.
Keep rockin'.

Oh, I say wow, too, and think this is incredibly awesome.

Thanks so much, guys!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your decision.
ReplyDeleteI'll leave you with three quotes, since I'm a quote freak.
"In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it."
-Robert Heinlein (1907-1988)
"Do not go where the path may lead;
go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Why not go out on a limb?
Isn't that where the fruit is?"

You ended your blog, focusing on the fact that you have to trust God with what will be happening (or not happening) in your future. You're moving into this new phase of your life with the correct perspective because your trust is in the right place and you have a proper view of who God is. Although change is uncomfortable at times, it is also exciting, even when you're going through the "bumps". Trust God and be thankful for ALL things that will come your way and you, Heather and the kids will do just fine. We're happy for you and will be praying!
First of all, let me say "HOLY CRAP!" (and tomorrow you will find out why on my blog). Also, if you feel like God is leading you in this direction, then you should definitley try it. You are young enough to make big changes so go for it! You will have to keep us up-to-date and good luck! I will pray for you!!
ReplyDeleteUh...by the way, holy crap was meant in a GOOD way. :)
